A “Guest Book” painted on the wall

By the end of the 1500s, the Scriptorium was used as a guest house. On the wall of the room are the names of some of the people who have lived in the castle, painted in a reddish-brown colour. Some people who have stayed in the room in the 1580s have been Nicolaus Sabell, Johan von Ungern, and the brothers Bernt and Moritz Taube, who were the court junkers (noble courtiers) of Pontus de la Gardie, who was the son-in-law of Duke John, later John III of Sweden. Reportedly, Pontus and Moritz drowned in the Narva River when they were on their way back from successful peace negotiations in Russia.

At the very top of the wall is a large painting of the crest of Isak Behm, who was responsible for the construction of the Oulu and Kajaani castles. In 1597 he became Duke Charles IX of Sweden’s clerk, and later he was named Governor of Ostrobothnia.
