Tyskveien

Hike

Distance:
12 km
Estimated time:
Approx. 3-4 hours

At the end of the Signaldalen valley/Čiekŋalvuovdi, you can take a historical stroll along “Tyskveien” (the German road) and enjoy wonderful views of Finland, Sweden and down the valley. In this area, you can find the flower Lapland rosebay, which is a rare plant in the rhododendron family.

To get here, you need to drive up the Signaldalen valley towards Paras/Bárrás. Turn right when you cross the bridge at the Brunes community hall (marked Parasveien). You can park here in the crossing between the Parasdalen/Bárrásvuovdi and Stordalen/Didnovággi valleys or turn left and drive in the direction the signs point and follow Stordalsveien as far as you can drive then park at the end of the road.

The path is approx. 6 km. It’s relatively flat to start, but once you cross the bridge there is a slightly more demanding ascent.

Signs have been erected along the “German road” with information about what happened in this area during World War II. Five bunkers dating from the war also remain in the area.
