Steward's house

Building

The steward had an important role in agrarian society and life at the manor. The steward was responsible for supervising the workers and maintaining the manor grounds. The steward’s residence was often placed close to the main house of the manor, since the owners of the manor and the steward had to meet daily for the estate to be run successfully. On the other hand, placing the stewards residence next to the main house made it possible for the owner of the manor to keep a close eye on the steward and his work.

The steward’s house at Hertonäs was built in the middle of the 18th century and it was changed to a café in 1926, and later on to the restaurant Wanha mylly. Efforts have been made to keep the architecture of the building as intact as possible, but some modern patios have been built on the outside, for instance.
